Mepham has Calhoun's Number

Posted Sunday, February 08, 2009 by Greg Diamond
After losing six straight games, Mepham finally has a reason to cheer.  With the gym filled to capacity for senior day, the Pirates knocked off rival Calhoun 48-47.  Mepham played hard right from the start building a 17-14 lead by the end of the first quarter.  The second quarter was dominated by defense as only 12 combined points were scored, yet the Pirates maintained a 24-19 lead at Halftime.  The second half brought two quarters of hard faught intense basketball as Mepham saw its  6 point lead disappear.  Finally in the 4th quarter, two big threes by Andrew Kaminsky kept the game tied  and the game winner came with 5 seconds left as Nick Andreu drained a free throw, his only point of the game to seal the game.  The win made the Pirates a perfect  2-0 for the season against the Colts.

Kudos all the players and coaches who put forth such effort to secure the win, especially in front of a big (and finally loud) home crowd.

And on a personal note- I'd like to thank Coach Wojcieski Coach Koester and all of my teammates  who gave me the opportunity to play in my first game of the season, after being injuured all season.  It was a thrill to finally contribute to the team, not by recording stats, but by making some of my own.  It's a gesture i won't forget.

This will probably be my last article of the season and for all those playing varsity next year, I say good luck.  Hopefully you can be the team to break the now  40 year boys basketball playoff drought.  And for our seniors, Nick Ditusa, Andrew Kaminsky and Rich Biachi good luck in college next year.

The Pirates season concludes tomorrow with a 6:15 game at Conference Champs, Freeport.
